Biography

Steven Curtin was born April 23, 1960 in Madison, Wisconsin.  He received an MFA in Electronic Music and the Recording Media in 1989 from the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music, where he studied composition with David Rosenboom, Anthony Braxton and Arturo Salinas.  Prior to this he studied composition with  Salvatore Martirano and computer music with James Beauchamp at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and attending Macalester College .

While at Wisconsin he studied music, computer science and engineering, and worked at the Industrial Engineering department and later the Computer Aided Engineering Laboratory as a computer systems administrator. While at Illinois he studied music composition and computer science, and worked as a Research Assistant computer graphics and image processing programmer at the Materials Research Laboratory.  

He then moved to the California Bay Area, where he lived for six and a half years from 1987-1993, attending graduate school and working for Opcode, Passport and Studer-Editech.   After that he spent a month in Amsterdam, Holland in a research residency at the STEIM institute. Until the end of 2001 lived on the East Coast, working for Ensoniq in Pennsylvania, followed by Lucent Technologies and Agere Systems in New Jersey.

From 2001-2004 he was an Audio Applications Engineering Manager for Sirius Satellite Radio at their office in Milford, MI and Farmington Hills, MI.  

From 2004-mid 2006 he was a software engineer in the medical electronics field, first consulting for Integrated Sensing Systems in Ypsilanti, MI and then working as an R&D Senior Software Engineer at Terumo Heart in Ann Arbor, MI.

Starting in September of 2006 he left full-time engineering work to go back to school in the Psychology field. He will start work on an MA degree in Clinical Psychology at the Michigan School of Professional Psychology. For more information see the Psychology page of this web site.

Steve lives with his wife Barbara and their son Brian in the West Suburban Detroit area.   His wife and son run a hand-made beeswax candle business called Two Bees Candles.  Steve, Brian and his percussion teacher Muruga Booker have recently completed a CD of jokes and drumming called I’ve Got a Joke for You, which is available at CD Baby.
